The export of English Draughts to America
The name for Draughts without the obligation to take was checkers, for Draughts with the obligation to take under penalty of the huff draughts. Checkers is the name for the game in the United States, in Great Britain the name is draughts. The first English colonization of what was called New England in those days started early in the 17th century.
These facts lead us to two conclusions:
1. The ancient game with free capture survived until the 17th century. There are no indications that the game was played in 18th century England.
2. It was the variety with free capture that English players brought to New England.
